File Early if Your Tax Due is More Than Two Weeks Later The earliest filing deadline that you can use your credit or debit card is usually the date your tax return is due. In this case, you can use the cash payment or your credit or debit card on your federal tax return no later than April 15. If your tax return is due on or before April 16, 2017, use your credit or debit card on your federal tax return by April 18, 2017. Make Sure Your Tax Return Is Prepared and Attested by a CPA If your taxes are being prepared by an accountant, prepare your tax return with them and have them prepare your attachments. In addition, use the attachments that are provided to your tax preparer. Attachments should always be prepared by a professional tax preparer. Do Not Make a Final Payment Your return, whether filed electronically or in paper form, must be complete before you can file it. Any additional information requests you make after you file your return or attach it to another return are a final request. Once you complete or attach your return, you will have four additional business days in which you can file it electronically or in paper form.
